What is a project synopsis?
A project synopsis is a one-to-three page summary of your proposed final year project. It is submitted to your college department for approval before you begin actual development. Think of it as a project proposal that tells your guide what you plan to build, why it matters, and how you will build it.
Most Indian universities — including those affiliated with AKTU, VTU, Mumbai University, JNTU, Anna University, and RGPV — require students to submit a synopsis before granting project approval. Without an approved synopsis, you cannot start your final year project officially.
Why does the synopsis format matter?
Your project guide reviews dozens of synopses every semester. A poorly formatted synopsis creates doubt about your seriousness and can lead to rejection even if your project idea is solid. A clean, properly formatted synopsis shows that you understand academic writing standards and gives your guide confidence in your ability to complete the project.
Colleges often have their own formatting requirements. Some mandate a specific font size (Times New Roman, 12pt), margins (1 inch on all sides), and section ordering. However, the core sections remain the same across all universities. We cover the universal structure here and note where universities commonly differ.
Standard synopsis format for final year project
Every project synopsis should contain these sections in order:
1. Title of the project
Your project title should be specific and descriptive. Avoid vague titles like "AI Project" or "Web Application." Instead, write something like "AI-Powered Disease Prediction System Using Random Forest and Flask" or "E-Commerce Platform with Recommendation Engine Using Django and React." A good title tells the reader exactly what technology you are using and what problem you are solving.
2. Student details
Include your full name, enrollment number, branch (CSE, IT, BCA, MCA), semester, batch year, and the name of your college. If it is a group project, list all team members with their enrollment numbers.
3. Guide details
Name and designation of your internal project guide. If you have an external guide or industry mentor, include their details as well with their company name.
4. Introduction and background
Write two to three paragraphs explaining the domain of your project. What is the problem space? Why is this area important? What existing solutions are available and what are their limitations? This section sets the context for your project and helps the evaluator understand why your work is needed.
For example, if your project is a medical image classification system, discuss how manual diagnosis is time-consuming, how AI is being adopted in healthcare, and what accuracy levels current solutions achieve. Then transition into what your project will do differently or better.
5. Problem statement
State the specific problem your project addresses in two to three sentences. Be precise. Instead of "healthcare is difficult," write "Manual screening of chest X-rays for tuberculosis takes an average of 20 minutes per patient and is prone to human error, especially in high-volume government hospitals where a single radiologist handles 100+ cases daily."
6. Objectives of the project
List three to five clear, measurable objectives. Each objective should start with an action verb: "develop," "implement," "integrate," "evaluate," or "deploy." For example:
- Develop a web-based disease prediction system using machine learning algorithms
- Implement user authentication with role-based access for patients and doctors
- Integrate a trained Random Forest model with 95%+ accuracy on the test dataset
- Deploy the application on a cloud server with a responsive user interface
7. Scope of the project
Define what your project will and will not cover. This manages expectations and prevents scope creep. For instance: "This project covers prediction for five common diseases using structured patient data. It does not cover medical imaging analysis or real-time monitoring."
8. Technology stack
List the programming languages, frameworks, libraries, databases, and tools you plan to use. Be specific about versions. Example:
- Frontend: React 18, Bootstrap 5, Axios
- Backend: Django 5.0, Django REST Framework
- Database: PostgreSQL 15
- ML: scikit-learn 1.3, Pandas, NumPy
- Deployment: AWS EC2, Nginx, Gunicorn
9. Methodology
Describe how you will develop the project. Most final year projects follow the Waterfall or Agile methodology. Briefly explain which approach you are using and why. Include a high-level overview of the development phases: requirements gathering, system design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
10. Expected outcomes
What will the finished project look like? What will it be able to do? Describe the expected deliverables: a working web application, a trained ML model, a mobile app, a comprehensive project report, and a presentation. If applicable, mention expected accuracy metrics or performance benchmarks.
11. References
List three to five references in IEEE format. Include research papers, books, or official documentation that relate to your project domain. This shows your guide that you have done preliminary research.
Common mistakes in project synopsis writing
These are the errors that get synopses rejected most often:
- Vague problem statements — saying "current systems have problems" without specifying what those problems are
- Copy-pasted content — guides can spot plagiarized synopses instantly; write in your own words
- Missing technology details — listing "Python" without specifying whether you mean Django, Flask, FastAPI, or a CLI tool
- Unrealistic scope — claiming you will build an "AI that replaces doctors" in four months
- No references — this suggests you have not done any background research
- Wrong formatting — not following your university's template, using inconsistent fonts, or missing sections
Synopsis format differences by university
While the core structure is universal, here is how some major Indian universities vary:
- AKTU (formerly UPTU) — requires a standard proforma available on the university website. Must include supervisor's signature and department stamp.
- VTU — uses a prescribed format with specific section headings. Synopsis must be submitted through the college's project coordinator.
- Mumbai University — accepts both individual and group synopses. Group projects need each member's contribution clearly outlined.
- Anna University — requires an abstract (150-250 words) at the beginning of the synopsis.
- JNTU — mandates inclusion of a Gantt chart showing the project timeline.
